Finally, some (mostly) clear skies today – so jumped in the car and headed 40 mins west of Melbourne’s CBD, just past Melton on the Western Highway, to the Long Forest Conservation Reserve, which protects the last remaining bull mallee scrub south of the Great Dividing Range. This hidden and little visited reserve presented an enormous variety of landscapes in a very short walk – and the Comadai Creek flats at the bottom of the rugged mallee and shale escarpment are lush and teeming with birdlife – perfect for a winter explore, and no need to worry about snakes! A really wonderful walk full of interest and absolute peace – a real highlight for the West chapter in Melbourne Walks!!
Just went up there this weekend – absolutely gorgeous!

It must be looking fantastic after all the recent rain, Prue! I was walking in the Brisbane Ranges yesterday, and have never seen the creeks so full! Should be a spectacular spring in the Victorian bush after all this water. Julie

I just had your “Melbourne’s Best Bush, Bay & City Walks” book delivered – really looking forward to doing a few of the shorter walks with Mum later in the year!
